Sin Barreras Website Redesign

Disclaimer: This project was completed as a volunteer project. All designs and views expressed are of my own and serve as recommendations to the development team.

Overview

Sin Barreras is a nonprofit based in Albemarle County that seeks to support the local Hispanic population and raise awareness of issues the community faces.

Role: UX Researcher, UX Designer

Team: Me, Sin Barreras Website Development team

Duration: 4 Months

Tools: Paper/Pen, Figma

Problem Statement

The current website is outdated and could use a revamp. How can we improve the website to address user needs?

first off, we need to refine the problem statement with specific user insights

Users

The website draws traffic from a variety of users. I created six personas of each type of user to better understand specific issues that they may come cross when trying to accomplish their specific goals on the site.

User Journey Map

The website has many pages, so to make it easier for me and the development team to keep track of the links and pages, I created a user journey map that follows two of the personas.

after understanding the user population, I conducted six interviews to learn more about specific pain points.

Insights

1

Content Organization

  • Need more details on programs offered

  • Provide contact information for staff members

  • Need more details on previous events and fundraisers

  • Display statistics/numbers to demonstrate impact

2

Details

  • Remove the pop up as it calls attention away from user's goal

  • Rename the Learn More tab for clarity

  • Rename the Bienvenidos tab to improve accessibility to non Spanish speakers

  • Streamline the donation process

  • Visually distinguish the Mission Statement

Competitive Analysis

I conducted a survey of four websites of similar nonprofit organizations with the goal of determining what features improve user experience that Sin Barreras can also implement. The nonprofits were selected due to their establishment in urban areas like Sin Barreras as well as similar mission statements and goals.

Based on my experience going through each website, I developed a list of areas of improvement for Sin Barreras:

  1. Improve its homepage with more action items.

  2. Expand its programs and services section with more details

  3. Provide an interest form for volunteers

  4. Provide an Events tab to show previous initiatives.

At the cumulation of the research phase, here's my list of recommendations for the redesign:

  1. Replace the updates pop up with a banner at the top of the screen

  2. Provide more actionable items such as buttons or links on the homepage

  3. Demonstrate impact done by the organization by providing key statistics/figures on the homepage

  4. Expand the Our Work tab with more details about each program.

  5. Add contact information for specific people of interest.

  6. Visually distinguish employment and volunteering opportunities

  7. Provide a Google Form or equivalent for interested volunteers

  8. Create an Events tab to detail previous and annual events as well as collaborations and fundraisers

  9. Rename the Learn More tab to a more specific name like Our Cause/Our Progress

  10. Rename the Bienvenidos tab to “Bienvenidos, Welcome”

  11. Visually distinguish the Mission Statement to make it easier for users to locate

After conducting interviews and competitive analysis, I presented my recommendations to the development team. We are collaborating on incorporating changes to the website, so stay tuned. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like an update or would like to talk about my design process!
